Detention

Our heroes find themselves in detention with Ms. Graham. The blackboard reads,

“Remember you are here for a reason and you have no one to blame but yourself.”

Why are our heroes in detention?

  • Asher - frequent flyer

  • Martin - built a flamethrower and put it on his battle bot

  • James - frequent flyer, lots of little infractions added up

  • Jeremy - corrected the teacher

  • Mark - clocked a guy who was bullying another student

Ms. Graham falls asleep, which is her usual MO according to the frequent fliers of the group. Martin takes advantage of her sleeping to build a catapult out of a pencil sharpener, which he uses to fling a spit ball at Mark.

Mark confiscates the device and sets it on the teacher’s desk.

Outside, the weather takes a turn from a nice fall day to a heavy downpour, with lightning and heavy winds.

In a flash of light a mysterious man in a dark coat appears in the room with our heroes, muttering and seeming generally confused. Mark sees that the newcomer is armed and the group tries to get him to explain himself and to leave the school.

Jeremy’s backpack grows to be huge and falls off the desk. The mysterious visitor tells James/the group that for homework they should read page 194 — the one with the lilies.

Tornado sirens sound, and with a flash of lightning the mysterious man disappears.

The book

The book in James’ backpack is written in a strange language, with strange images of creatures that the group doesn’t recognize. Lilies glow from the page and a band of black energy forms around the book.

Martin pokes the book with a yardstick, but the tool is pushed away. When Jeremy touches the book with his hand a hologram-like map of Sailorville Lake appears. On the eastern edge of this map there is a purple ring of flowers.

Energy leaves the book and hops to the back of the heroes’ hands, leaving a tattoo-like mark on each of them.

The bell rings - detention is over. Ms. Graham tells the group to go home.

The group agrees that they should explore this - mostly because they can’t have hand tattoos - but Mark’s dad won’t let him stay after detention with a group of boys the family doesn’t know.

The party splits.

Mark’s house

Mark’s parents are very upset about the “devil mark” tattoo and send him to his room without any pot roast. He sneaks out of his house to join up with the rest of the party at the lake.

The Lake

Mark rejoins the party to find Jeremy has drinking drugs and Martin is using these (vodka in a plastic bottle) as an impromptu bomb.

When the party is reunited at the point on the map where the ring of flowers was showing. When the whole party is present the book unlocks and on page 194 the find a poem written in a phonetic alphabet.

The party deciphers it to read;

The planes are but an inch apart

But there is no way to clear

Except for deepest magic

and to overcome all fear

The eyes that see

The cry that calls

Shall soon remove all doubt

Time shall freeze,

the king shall fall

As the portal comes about

After Asher reads the spell the woods go quiet and a ring of light forms at the edge of the water.

A portal pulls the party away from Sailorville into a wormhole. Some members of the party see a large hand reaching towards them in the wormhole and a purple light seeming to protect the party.

Unknown location

The party lands in a soft clearing under a thick canopy of trees that blocks out most of the light. Jeremy confirms that none of the plants that they see are native to Iowa.

Martin tries to make a compass from magnets but finds there is no magnetic north to be located.

Martin is terrified - rightfully so - and rejects the party’s urges to just “push it down.” Mark panics - trying to remember his Boy Scout survival skills - and tries to comfort Martin by holding his hand and trying to lead the party uphill to get their bearings.

The party hears huge footsteps and sees a large, bearlike creature with feathers enter the clearing. They watch as an arrow takes the creature down and a tall, slender being with pointed ears confirms the creature’s death with their knife.

The newcomer sees the party and leaves their kill to turn and runaway, leaving the teens alone in the woods.
