In the Clearing

2 creatures enter the clearing. They ask our heroes why they are on the wrong side of the stream - on the king’s land.

They request help moving the owl bear they killed back across the stream, which our heroes provide.

The party follows the creatures back to their cabin.

  • Brun - dwarf

  • Powel - elf

  • Sharro - dragonborn

They’re a group of fur traders/hunters/poachers (allegedly). They tell our party that they have found themselves in Callian Forest, which borders the Kingdom of Atla.

At the mention of the king, the hunters spit on the ground (which our heroes try their best to emulate).

Our heroes are in double trouble. For one, they’re now complicit in “unintentional” poaching. Secondly, humans are harbingers of doom and are very much not welcome in this land.

The party is ushered to the basement to rest/for the hunters to decide what to do with us.

Despite our best efforts to stay awake and keep watch, it’s been a very long day, and one-by-one our heroes drift off to sleep.

A Dream

A lapis lazuli platform hovers between a bright night of endless stars and the dark, turbulent sea below. A figure sits at a table on the platform, writing in a book.

Our party can see each other, but we can’t hear each other speak.

The figure tells us we aren’t supposed to be here.

One-by-one our heroes are pulled into individual visions.

  • Mark - pillars of smoke on the edge of a meadow, darkness hovers, held back by a dragon on a silver shield.

  • Jeremy - bugs in the grass of the meadow

  • Asher - a hurricane

  • Bayfold - gnomes, tinkerers

  • James - nothing. Everything vanishes except for the figure and their desk.

The figure asks each member of the party, “What does this mean to you?”

  • Mark - he is willing to put himself between others and the darkness, if that is what’s asked of him

  • Jeremy - devotion to and care of the little things he encounters

  • Asher - he sees the storm inside that he tries to keep pushed down

  • Bayfold - necessity is the mother of invention. The figure tells him he doesn’t need to work alone.

  • James - says it doesn’t mean another. In his mind’s eye he sees a sea of white and blue lilies.

In a flash of orange light, the party comes to, back in the basement of the hunters’ cabin.

The marks on our arms have expanded to larger, geometric tattoos. Mark’s tattoo features a new shield. Jeremy gained a claw. Asher’s has a hurricane. Bayfold received a gear. James now has a lily.

Jeremy hears a conversation happening upstairs. We listen as the hunters consider killing our party or sending us away.

James finds a fire poker and Mark finds that he’s a natural at wielding it.

The hunters come down to the basement where they propose sending us to Hyrule - which seems like a great option, as opposed to dying in this basement.

The hunters tell the party that Hyrule is a settlement down the mountain. They arm our heroes with cloaks, scant provisions, and pure white and silver pelts.

“When humans show up in Atla, bad things follow.”

As we’re about to depart, the king’s guard rides up. Our party hides in a crawlspace.

Utal, sent by Lady Commander Voy, says that they found a trail of blood leading from the king’s side of the stream back to this cabin. Powel quickly breaks and tells the guard about the owl bear.

Utal says that they’re more concerned about rumors of humans, and show a plastic vodka bottle they found in the forest.

In the crawlspace our party tries to keep quiet as the soldiers search the house. Mark is about to lose his cool, not handling the spiders crawling over them well, when Bayfold discovers he can cast Prestidigitation and solves that issue.

The king’s guard claims the cabin as the king’s land before leaving.

Brun gives our party a rough map. Tells us that when we find someone who acts like they want to kill us, we should say, “Your fellows seem ornary today,” as a passcode.

We leave the cabin and run through the woods, dodging the king’s guard and whatever else is in the forest at night. Our party hides in a fallen tree where they spend a restless night.

Upon waking in the morning they are met with a beautiful forest, still and bright.
